From a Concerning Spot to a Diagnosis

A new or changing growth, a spot that repeatedly bleeds, or a sore that does not heal is a reason to arrange an evaluation. These findings have several possible causes; appearance alone does not establish a cancer diagnosis.

Your dermatologist will examine the area and review your history. If a biopsy is recommended, a sample is sent for microscopic evaluation. The pathology findings help guide the next steps. If you already have a diagnosis, bring the biopsy report and information about prior treatment.

A Treatment Plan Based on the Cancer and the Person

Treatment depends on the cancer type, its location and extent, previous treatment, and your overall health. Options may include Mohs surgery or another surgical procedure for appropriate cancers. Certain conditions may require other treatments or care involving additional specialists.

We discuss the recommended approach, its purpose, and the follow-up needed. Advanced or uncommon diagnoses may require coordination across specialties; the treatment plan should reflect the specific pathology and clinical findings.

Follow-Up and High-Risk Skin Care

People with a history of skin cancer, immunosuppression, or other risk factors may need ongoing surveillance. The timing of examinations is individualized. Follow-up also provides an opportunity to evaluate new concerns and discuss skin self-examinations and sun protection.
